Editorial: Unrest In The Dairy Industry

The European farming union, Copa-Cogeca has warned the EU that the dairy market is still delicate and that if action is not taken to prevent it, another dairy crisis will occur.

In Brussels, earlier in the week over one thousand dairy farmers demonstrated against the proposals of the High Level Group on Milk.

The protesters said that the group's proposals did not yield a solution for the dairy crisis and will eventually worsen the situation of European milk producers.

At the same time, farmers in Switzerland were demonstrating against the inaction of the branch organisation milk (BO Milk), which failed to help them during the crisis.

In the UK, the Court of Appeal has overturned the Welsh Assembly's plans for a badger cull, following an appeal from the Badger Trust.

The cattle industry is devastated by this news, as bovine tuberculosis continues to affect an increasing number of herds.

In China, there are concerns over further melamine tainted milk, as food safety authorities seized 64 tonnes of contaminated raw dairy materials.

Another 12 tonnes of processed milk powder products, also tainted, were also seized from the Dongyuan Dairy Factory, in Minhe County.
