The latest Agricultural Outlook report from the OECD and the FAO predicts that livestock prices will fall over the next 10 years, despite world demand for meat increasing.

The report also says that expansion of the biofuel markets will increase demand for wheat and coarse grain, which in turn will push up production costs and prices - a bad sign for the feed markets.

MEPs in Europe will vote this week on a more uniform system of food labelling in the EU to help consumers make the right choices about the food that they buy.

Back in March, the European Parliament Environment and Consumer Protection Committee voted in favour of country of origin labelling on meat, poultry, dairy products, fresh fruit and vegetables and other single-ingredient products.

In Scotland, trials are underway to develop an automated process to determine the quality of meat.

The development of the technology would offer producers and processors a way of guaranteeing consumers a consistent eating experience.

In light of recent conflicts between the US and Taiwan regarding beef trade, Taiwanese officials have said that they will be conducting on-site inspections of US slaughterhouses that export beef to Taiwan.

This is to ensure that all US beef exports are adequately labelled.

The Russian Veterinary Authority, after inspecting Brazilian slaughterhouses and meat processing plants, has said that many do not meet the sanitary norm and export requirements.

From now on, the Authority will carry out regular inspections of Brazilian plants with the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture.
