Editorial: Supply Management Will Have Dire Consequences For US Industry

The International Dairy Foods Association supports the introduction of a margin insurance programme to aid dairy producers in the US.

The programme, along with new risk management tools, would allow better management of price swings, allowing US producers to remain competitive.

However, the IDFA warns against a market stabilisation programme, saying that supply management will decrease demand for dairy products and limit industry growth.

Pfizer Animal Health has withdrawn its vaccine Pregsure BVD from the market in all EU countries.

This will allow the company and other stakeholders to investigate whether the vaccine is a possible cause of bovine neonatal pancytopaenia (BNP), otherwise known as bleeding calf syndrome.

The cause of BNP is still unknown, other research undertaken across Europe is exploring how colostrum intake could trigger the disease, as well as the possibility of it being an emerging disease.

Researchers in the UK have discovered components of the bovine mastitis-causing bacterium, Streptococcus uberis that plays a key role in the disease.

This discovery could lead the way to finally developing a vaccine for this endemic disease.

The UK's bluetongue status has changed to a lower risk zone. This means that all susceptible animals being brought in from other countries affected by BTV8 will have to meet more stringent vaccination conditions before importation. This is an important step to ensure that bluetongue does not return to the country.
