Editorial: US Export Concerns

China has informed US government officials that it will block imports of US dairy products as of 1 May, due to an alleged deficient export certification.

US dairy export value with China reached over $180 million in 2008. There are concerns that should the US be shut out of Chinese markets, other suppliers will quickly move in and displace the US market share.

This, the International Dairy Foods Association says, would result in a large loss of business and jobs for American dairy processors and suppliers.

US trade representatives are working hard to ensure that a bilateral solution is reached swiftly.

Countries are being urged to remain vigilant on disease control.

The Northern Irish Minister of Agriculture has asked producers to consider not importing animals from affected bluetongue areas. The Minister said that as we move into the higher risk period, producers should consider the potential consequences of a bluetongue outbreak in the country.

The FAO is urging countries to increase international surveillance of diseases, following three recent outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in Japan and South Korea.

So far Japan has slaughtered 385 animals, and the Republic of Korea has slaughtered 3,500 animals.

“Under the circumstances we consider that all countries are at risk and a review of preventive measures and response capacity would be welcome,” said FAO’s Chief Veterinary Officer Juan Lubroth.
