Editorial: Highlights Of NCBA Convention

Last week saw the National Cattlemen's Beef Association annual convention in San Antonio, Texas.

2009 was a busy year for the Beef Checkoff System, which funded a number of different programmes last year including research, education and innovation measures. Promoting beef in the industry's farm to fork programme was also a major focus.

Attendees heard how product development funded by the Checkoff system has added $1.4 billion to the industry through the creation of new chuck roll cuts. During the conference, the Beef Promotion Operating Committee of the Beef Board approved further spending on promotional projects.

The NCBA looked at increasing the value of beef carcases through the development of high value cuts from forequarter meat.

Through muscle profiling and producing single muscle cuts from the chuck and round, traditionally poorer meat cuts, the NCBA demonstrated that it is possible to add value between $50 - $70 to the animal.

The Department of Animal and Food Science at Texas Tech University told the convention that controlling dust when moving and loading animals could prevent carcase contamination of E.coli. Simple factors such as damping down the areas where cattle are rounded up could surpress the degree of contamination.

One of the main messages at the convention was that the industry needs to be more proactive in its response to the attacks it faces from anti-meat bodies and bad publicity in the mass media. The industry was urged to actively engage with consumers to show them how food is produced and how farmers and cattlemen care for the animals and environment.

We have 4 new features this week:

US Beef Gaining Strength in Asian Markets
The US beef industry is expecting to target Taiwan with a large promotional campaign, following the recent moves by the government to restrict US beef exports, writes TheCattleSite senior editor, Chris Harris.
Livestock and Products Annual Report - Argentina 2009
Drought has had a severe impact on cattle numbers, with lower beef production, consumption and exports expected due to a smaller herd. However, growth in the local feedlot industry, supported through government programmes is partially offsetting the fall in cattle numbers, according to the latest report by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.
Little Change Expected In South American Beef Exports
This year is expected to see some recovery in Brazilian beef production, although much of this is likely to be offset by a sharp fall in Argentina, writes Peter Duggan from the Strategic Information Services at Bord Bia.
Dutch Agriculture Sector 2009
Low milk prices left many dairy producers in the red, whilst beef producers were not much better off in 2009. Despite lower feed costs producers have struggled against low commodity prices according to a new report from Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
