Editorial: Hoping For Improved Markets Next Year

Following on from the recent climate change talks, the US, UK and Australia have announced projects and funding to reduce greenhouse gas emissions - measures that could have an impact on the global dairy industry.

The British Veterinary Association has called for more to be done to improve dairy cow welfare. In a statement, the association said that vets should take a more active role in educating farmers on welfare aspects and how they affect herd health, productivity and profit.

Conflicts over milk prices between producers and processors have finally been resolved in Tasmania, as a compromise has been reached.

2009 has been a hard year for the global dairy industry. With a downward trend in prices forcing smaller dairies out of business, producers have tried to stand their ground and push for higher milk prices.

In Europe, tens of thousands of farmers protested, pouring milk away, resulting in the establishment of a High Level Group, whose aim is to come up with measures to combat the milk crisis. In the US and Australia, dairy farmers have been receiving emergency funding to help them weather the storm.
