Scientists Beg Caution as Sunny Season Begins

As the summer sets in for producers in the Northern hemisphere, agricultural meteorologists are warning of the dangerous effects of heat stress on cattle.

Livestock become uncomfortable when the heat index reaches about 90 degrees. With heat indices at or above that level this week, it's critical for producers to be aware of what's going on with the animals.

In Nebraska, US, where the temperature and humidity have been particularly high, a thousand cattle actually died over just a two-day period.

Another threat was present in America this week. JBS Swift Beef Company, recalled approximately 41,280 pounds of beef products over fears of E. coli O157:H7 contamination. According to later reports, where this meat was distributed has not been released to the public in order to protect retailers.

It is now believed that the majority of the beef has already been eaten.
