Editorial: A Shortage of Vets and an Excess of Antibiotics

This week the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed a delay in the implementation of the final BSE rule, which would prohibit the use of high-risk cattle material in feed for all animal species. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), who are opposed to the feed rules, reacted by criticising the FDA's decision to solicit public comments solely on delaying the implementation of a new feed ban, rather than soliciting public comment on the ban itself.

The issue of animal antibiotics also found further limelight this week. Speakers at a US conference made calls to curtail the use of these antibiotics for fear that they will produce new antibiotic resistant pathogens and make human diseases even more difficult to treat.

Meanwhile, the Philippine government continued its drive to keep the country free of Foot and Mouth Disease by banning cattle imports from Egypt, Lebanon and also Taiwan.
