SOUTH KOREA - The number of livestock in South Korea rose on-year in the third quarter of 2018 due to more calves being bred, government data showed Thursday.

Yonhap News Agency reports that the data from Statistics Korea showed there were 3.13 million cattle in the country at the end of September, up 0.5 per cent, or 14,000, from a year earlier.

The rise in the number of cattle was caused by more calves being born in the country in the wake of price hikes and by a fall in the number of cattle slaughtered, the data showed.

Compared with a year before, higher market demand caused more cattle and sows to be bred, which pushed up overall numbers, the statistics office said.
