Over Ten FMD Outbreaks Reported Across Three Provinces in Mongolia

MONGOLIA - Dr Battsengel Dambadarjaa, Chief Veterinary Officer from the Veterinary and Animal Breeding Service at the Ministry for Food and Agriculture has reported 15 outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in various farms located in Khentii, Dornod and Sukhbaatar Provinces.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received a fifth follow-up report on Monday, 15 January.

According to the report, a reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test was conducted on 20 December 2017 at the All-Russian Research Institute for Animal Health (FGBI-ARRIAH), the OIE's reference laboratory.

According to the OIE, the outbreak is an ongoing event which started since January 2017.

The report states that in total, the number of cattle affected has reached 650, where all the affected animals have been killed and disposed of.

The remaining cattle population in the three provinces have received vaccination in response to the FMD outbreaks.

A total of 166,526, 177,056 and 206,012 animals have been vaccinated in Dornod, Khentii and Sukhbaatar respectively.

The source of the outbreaks remains inconclusive.
