Mrs Mead heads up the family’s 1,400 acre organic mixed farming enterprise at Holt Farm, Blagdon, Bristol.

The farm has a 420 pedigree Lakemead herd of British Friesans together with young stock, beef and arable crops.

The farm has 50 acres dedicated ti wildlife conservation and seeks to be energy self-sufficient on Miscanthus and solar cells.

The Yeo Valley brand started as a small scale yoghurt production and a local van delivery business.

The business has grown into the leading UK organic dairy brand with a £300 million turnover employing 1,800 workers and producing 8 million pots of yoghurt a week.

Mrs Mead now concentrates on the farming side of the business, following the death of her husband, Roger in 1990, and her son, Tim, heads up the milk processing side.

Following the presentation of the award Mrs Mead called for a unity within the dairy industry to face the difficult times and pressures dairy farmers are now facing within the UK, particularly with low market prices for milk.

Mrs Mead is pictured receiving the award from the Princess Royal.
