The talukas are identified as Bardez, Pernem and Sattari in North Goa, and Dharbandora, Quepem and Sanguem in South Goa.

As per NABARD estimates, Goa milk demand is 432,000 litres per day while the supply within the state is around 140,000 per day and the balance is met from other states.

The development agency said that if the project is implemented properly, Goa milk output will increase by 25,000 liters per day.

The agency also said that close to $19 million will be needed for the dairy development plan during the 2015-16 fiscal year.

During the 2014-15 fiscal year, the government has set aside $8.05 million for dairy development in the state.

During a seminar in Goa recently, NABARD general manager, BB Sethi said that the project has been designed with the idea to reduce dependence on other states for milk and to increase milk production, as well to provide employment opportunities to dairy farmers.

The state dairy sector has been lacking behind due to lack of recognized cattle breeds. More than 70 per cent of the livestock are identified to be a poor quality breed.

The state also faces problem in getting good veterinary services and green and dry fodder is the major concern for dairy farmers.
