An official trade embargo withdrawal was issued over the weekend.

The announcement followed two days of negotiations and is of major significance to Brazil’s economy, according to agriculture minister Neri Geller.

He said that Chinese signatory, the agriculture minister Zhi Shuping, had pledged to ensure the embargo removal would be rolled out to all relevant beef plants.

Buying was suspended in 2012 when an atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy was found in a mature cow in Parana.

He said: "The reopening of this huge market is one more victory from the quality and safety of the animal and plant health protection system in Brazil.

“We are one of the largest producers and exporters of beef in the world, certified by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) status with negligible risk for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE).

“The decision of the government of China is the recognition of our rigorous process of production and control.”

China bought $37.768 million worth of Brazilian beef in 2012. Chinese trade opened at $2.5 million in 2009.
