ANALYSIS - McDonald's VP of Global Sustainability Bob Langert attended the National Cattleman's Beef Association meeting in February to talk with cattle producers about McDonald's plans for sustainable beef.
During Langert's presentation, he shared with cattle producers that McDonald's aims to begin purchasing verified sustainable beef in 2016 - and they're on a collaborative journey to get there.
McDonald's offers a range of menu choices, but burgers remain one of their most iconic menu items. McDonald's wants to continue that legacy by following the 3Es of sustainability: ethics, environment and economics.
They want to do their part to improve environmental practices in the way beef is produced, support positive workplaces in the beef industry, and drive continuous improvement in animal health and welfare. And they want to do all of this while providing affordability and quality, along with economic viability for those who raise cattle and produce beef.
When it comes to sustainability, Langert said, McDonald's can't do it alone, so they will listen, learn, and collaborate with stakeholders from farm to the front counter to develop sustainable beef solutions.
