Spanish Dairy Farmers Paid 16 Per Cent More in February

SPAIN – Farmers were paid 16 per cent more for milk produced in February 2014 than the previous year, a government review of the dairy sector has revealed.

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture has produced an analysis of dairy foods data illustrating the improving picture of Spanish dairying.

Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fernando Burgaz (pictured) said improving average milk prices were testament to the work of the sustainable dairy package and the milk monitoring committee.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, Mr Burgaz noted the response from the retail sector regarding discounting milk at a loss.

He said there had been a ‘clear decline’ in non-profit milk sales of fifty per cent.

Consumer data revealed an increase in cheese demand in 2013 – which stood at an average of 8.22 kilos per capita.

Leading the pack is soft cheese, taking 30 per cent of sales.
