Registration is now open for The Large Herd Seminar 2014, under the theme of “Total Dairy” which offers something for everyone in the UK dairy industry, irrespective of herd size.

Sponsored by Elanco and Zinpro, the Seminar takes place on 24-26 June 2014 at Tortworth Court Four Pillars Hotel, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, with the new schedule enabling delegates to choose which sessions they would like to attend, depending on their area of interest.

As always, expert speakers from the US, Europe and the UK will be taking centre stage. Lectures, workshops and on farm demonstration will cover five main critical aspects of managing a modern dairy herd; the cow, the feed, the calf, the feet and the people.

American “Dairy Coach” Tom Wall will be talking about all aspects of labour management on farm with a workshop looking at how to put his advice into action. There’ll also be talks from world leaders in foot trimming and hoof health, Karl Burgi and Christer Bergsten, as well as Professor Sandra Godden, a leading investigator in the USA on Johne’s control and calf rearing.

Professor Mike van Amburgh will also be covering the liquid feeding phase of the calf and what it means to future performance in the milking cow, while Ian Ohnstad looks at how to reduce mastitis and teat trauma during milking.

The role of new technologies in boosting performance will be the topic up for discussion by Trevor DeVries, while Dr Bill Stone will show us how to improve the consistency and management of feeding the milking herd. There’ll also be a workshop run by Prof Mike van Amburgh focusing on the latest developments in rumen nitrogen utilisation.

Split into four half-days, delegates will be able to select which session they attend for up to four of the half-days on offer, subject to availability. This could be a mix and match between lectures and workshops, depending on preference, with some workshops repeated over the three days allowing greater flexibility.

Warwick Bastard of Model Nutrition Dairy Consulting, who organises the event along with Evidence Based Veterinary Consultancy (EBVC),says the new small group workshops of between 40-60 people will enable more interaction and discussion.

“I’d encourage farmers to come and bring their staff along. The practical sessions are an opportunity to ask farm specific questions and improve on what you are doing,” he says.

“We’ve got something for everyone. All of our sessions, be it lectures or workshops will offer practical, take home messages linked to the latest technical developments.”

Delegates who book their place before May will also receive a 10% early bird discount on the standard price.

Attendees can choose to attend individual days or the whole conference with the option of hotel accommodation and evening dinner. People are advised to book hotel rooms early to avoid disappointment.
