Dairy UK expects several challenges to beset the dairy sector in 2014 which will have important supply chain ramifications.

Chief executive at Dairy UK, Dr Judith Bryans, urged the diary sector to be active in the process of reviewing Best Available Techniques Reference Documents (BREFs).

She stressed the significant cost implications of BREFs.

In addition, reviews are taking place on the Commission’s climate change and energy package and the EU Emission Trading Scheme.

“All of these issues suggest it will be a milestone year for sustainability in the dairy sector,” said Dr Bryans. “As such, Dairy UK will be dedicating additional resources to work in this area.”

In response, Diary UK has extended director Peter Dawson’s portfolio to include sustainability and have appointed Jo Stewart as Environment Manager.

Mr Dawson said: “Sustainability remains at the heart of decision-makers’ agendas across Europe and it is essential that the UK industry’s interests are represented vigorously.”
