Of the 1,712 cattle being imported into Russia and Kasakhstan on the ship ABOU KARIM IV, 1,627 were alive and a further 11 had serious injuries.

The veterinary authorities were told that the deaths were largely caused when the ship hit a heavy storm on the Bay of Biscay.

The Rosselkhoznador veterinary officials carried out tests on the surviving cattle to eliminate the possible threat of anthrax, before seeing the cattle safely and securely shipped on the their final destinations in the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan.

The 11 injured cattle were returned to the country of export.
