Russia Making Most of Lower Italian Cheese Price

02 October 2013

ITALY – Russia is Italy’s biggest buyer of cheese in eastern Europe, this year’s market data shows.

First half of the year reports show that 3,527 tons of Italian cheeses were bought up by Russia.

The most popular varieties have been Mozzarella, Ricotta, Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano, according to the Italian Milk and Dairy Association.

Extensive quality checks and promotional efforts have mounted over the past two years to result in such an upturn in trading.

But, analysts are saying that increase in demand is yet to have a positive effect on prices which are 4.3 per cent lower per kilo between January and June.

Processors are saying that the long term effect of lower prices has won foreign interest and boosted market sales.

The 'sacrifice' has led to an increase in exports to America, Asia and Oceania, although sales to Africa and North America have dropped.

Overall, the effect of attempts to drive sales have increased global exports by 4.5 per cent.
