The Arla UK milk pool stands at 3.2 billion litres which will be expanded with a recruitment drive for new suppliers and increasing production of existing farms.

Arla has also said it will close the Ashby-de-la-Zouch dairy and distribution facility, transferring deliveries to the new facility at Aylesbury.

Incremental shift of liquid milk between plants will begin in October.

Overall, the discontinuation of the Ashby plant is expected to cost 370 jobs - subject to consultation.

Third party providers could potentially be utilised for distribution functions although they assure that milk will continue to be regularly collected.

Lars Dalsgaard, head of Arla UK’s supply chain said: “Our new dairy in Aylesbury is on track to be processing milk, commercially, by the autumn and volumes are ahead of our original expectations.

“In line with our long-term business goal, we intend to maximise the use of our well-invested dairies, complemented by our new, cutting edge, processing facility in Aylesbury, to meet the requirements of our customers.”
