In keeping with government and industry pledges to review and reform the dairy supply chain, the news of more POs is part of a national policy to strengthen farmer bargaining power and takes the number of dairy farmers involved in producer organisation to 3,751.

In total, five POs now operate, encompassing Galicia, Andalusia and Navarre. Collectively they account for 1,315,000 tons of milk at 21 per cent of national output.

An additional separate PO has been developed for sheep milk transactions.
