The outlook for 2020 is that current national consumption of 2 million metric tons per year will increase to 3 million tons.

In order to achieve greater scales of production, the President has proposed a bill to Congress, enabling the creation of a Livestock Directorate.

Through structured farm development work and the creation of a national dairy policy the directorate will improve farm output, the Ministry of Agriculture has said.

Forage and feed plans, a dairy productivity breeding plan and livestock handling and welfare guidelines are amongst the support that will be available to producers.

Expansion comes as good news for the dairy sector, which generates US$1.1 billion, the most income of all agricultural sectors after poultry - $2 billion.

Of this, small family farms and ranches dominate milk production, accounting for 75 per cent of output.
