This is according to the Ministry of Agriculture the day another round of inoculations begin, reports the Ecuador and South American News Agency.

Cattle vaccinated last year will receive a repeat dose in 2013. Ultimate goals are FMD disease free status and easy mobilisation of animals.

The agency reported some resistance from farmers, because of a lack of knowledge of the benefits vaccination can bring.

Economic benefits are being mentioned by the industry, the prime one being meat export across the Andes region.

Pastor Gomez, a ranch manager in the Collimes area said there were initial difficulties in getting farmers to vaccinate because some cattle showed dose rejection.

However, cattle cannot be moved without the certificated to show health history, added Mr Gomez.
