Government Hail FMD Programme as Success So Far

With the highlands of Bolivia now FMD free, the government has confirmed it has managed 13 per cent eradication.

This is largely thanks to help received from the FAO who started a comprehensive funding programme in the year 2000 including the creation of a cattle registry system that greatly improved tracing and movement controls in cattle.

Funding has been mainly distributed in the form of manuals delivered to farmers on how to combat the disease, equipment supplied to laboratories and additional funding to ranchers in paying for equipment and time in managing FMD risks.

The process has involved close work between FAO funders and the Laboratories for Research and Veterinary Diagnostics.

Overall, the target of the scheme is to eventually achieve ‘good’ health status recognition from the OIE.
