Dairy Tactics for Tight Times

AUSTRALIA - Dairy farmers are facing major challenges in the 2012/13 season, as lower milk prices and higher input costs affect cash flow and on-going farm profitability. In response, Dairy Australia has developed 'Tactics for Tight Times' to support farmers through this period.

The campaign, delivered by Dairy Australia's Regional Development Programmes (RDPs), helps farmers:

  • Better understand their business position and cash flow options;
  • Develop management plans for reduced income and increased operating costs.

As part of the campaign in southern Australia, 17 'Tactics for Tight Times' farms will provide a platform for discussion about farm management decisions led by senior consultants and extension advisors.

Field Days on these farms enable dairy farmers to discuss tactical decisions specific to their region, such as maximising pasture and input use. The field days will also be supported by workshop and forum events. Regular updates will be supplied via Dairy Australia and the RDPs.
