Kurgan Strengthens Veterinary Control
RUSSIA - The veterinary service in the Kurgan region of Russia has allocated an additional 34 million rubles for measures to prevent the introduction and spread of African swine fever in the region, as well as the prevention and control of leukemia in cattle.

This decision was taken this week at a meeting of the regional government.
Head of the Veterinary Department for the Kurgan region, Tatiana Sandakova, said it was necessary to amend the special veterinary regulation programme for 2013 because of the sharp deterioration in the African Swine Fever situation in the Russian Federation.
Tatyana Sandakova said that no region is immune from getting ASF in its territory, becasue the virus is spread through a different ways ranging from direct contact with infected animals to transport vehicles. The virus is also highly resistant to environmental factors.
The additional funds will be used to improve the quality and speed of the rapid diagnosis of African swine fever, as well as relief at the source of the disease if it occurs in the region.
Leukemia in cattlen can have a serious impact on the development of dairy farming, Tatiana Sandakova said.
She added that farms must strictly adhere to existing controls, where milk for processing and subsequent sale must be obtained from farms that are free from the disease.
