Columbia Asks US to Recognise it as FMD Free

13 April 2012

COLUMBIA - The Columbian Ministry of Agriculture has asked the US government to recognise Columbia as a country free of foot and mouth disease (FMD).

With free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations underway between the two countries, Minister Juan Camilo Restrepo Salazar said that he would look to protect Columbian agriculture.

He said that the FTA would allow Columbia to maximise opportunities, and Columbia will continue to insist that the US sees Columbia as a FMD country that uses vaccination. He also said that it was important that Columbian meat and dairy products are not excluded from an FTA with South Korea and Turkey.
