After a wet spring and dry summer, many pastures could use some improvement, said Keith Johnson, Purdue Extension forage specialist. The conference will offer a number of sessions to help producers deal with problem areas and keep pastures in the best shape possible.

"It's been a problematic year for pastures in this part of the country," Mr Johnson said. "Cool-season grasses inherently aren't as productive in the summer, and dry weather worsens the problem. Many producers let livestock overgraze the pasture and the feeding of reserved hay for winter was fed during the growing season."

He said not only will conference participants learn to improve grazing and pastures, but they'll also have the chance to visit with university, industry and government experts and other livestock producers.

Each year the Heart of America Grazing Conference rotates among Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. The conference features speakers from many states that discuss a variety of grazing topics.

Representing Indiana this year will be Purdue Extension equine specialist Mark Russell, speaking about pasture care and management for grazing horses, and Victor Shelton, a grazing specialist with the US Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service, who will speak about dealing with problem areas in pastures.

"Producers who take the time to improve their pastures will reap the benefits," Mr Johnson said. "This particular conference will emphasise ways to improve grazing systems."

Also included in the program will be a trade show where participants can visit with industry professionals and learn more about new technologies available.

Before 13 January, registration is $35 per day or $50 for both days. After 13 January, rates are $45 per day or $70 for both days.
