AUSTRALIA - The Western Australian Farmers Federation (Inc.) (WAFarmers) has welcomed the news that Brownes Dairy has responded to its concerns about low prices being paid to former Challenge Dairy Cooperative (Challenge) suppliers.

Brownes has made the commitment to pay ex-Challenge suppliers parity with existing suppliers until the end of this calendar year.

WAFarmers’ Dairy Section had communicated with the major Western Australian dairy processor on multiple occasions, asking them to extract more value from the market place in order to bring these producers up to parity or run the risk of losing them to the industry altogether before next summer.

WAFarmers Dairy Section President, Peter Evans, has commended the decision.

“WAFarmers would like to acknowledge our appreciation for the action to reward dairy producers in what are already difficult dairy retail conditions,” said Mr Evans.

Mr Evans said that the announcement could not have come at a better time.

“Processors were at risk of losing producers following the collapse of the Challenge Cooperative last December,” he said.
