This follows the success of last year’s event which was attended by 60 dairy farmers working to represent dairy producers to milk buyers.

A range of speakers from Government, the sugar sector, the fruit and vegetable sector and private law firms will share their expertise on the implications of the European Commission’s dairy package proposals, the role of producer organisations and negotiation tools and tactics for farmers.

NFU dairy board chairman Mansel Raymond said: “I am delighted to be chairing our second summit, which is back by popular demand. There have been a lot of exciting developments since our inaugural summit last year – not least the recommendations of the High Level Expert Group on Milk and the resulting European Commission’s proposals for changes to milk contracts and producer bargaining power.

“A legislative proposal, which formally recognises the ability of dairy farmers to negotiate with dairy companies, could lead to a much strengthened role for farmer representatives. It is vitally important, therefore, that our farmer representatives are well informed on these issues and have an opportunity to debate and discuss the potential impacts of these changes.

“We are planning to offer delegates the opportunity to take part in workshops this year which will allow them to engage in more focused and detailed discussions. We have also invited speakers from other agriculture sectors to offer their perspectives on how we can perhaps do things differently in dairy. It is important to look outside our industry and share experiences and best practice with farmers operating in other markets.”

The event, which will be based on the theme of ‘Improving negotiating power and professionalism’, will again be held at Stoneleigh Park on April 20. Invitations have been sent to last year’s delegates and other farmer representatives can register their interest in attending by emailing [email protected].
