Dairy Farmers Spread The Word To Shoppers

UK - Yorkshire dairy farmers joined forces with the WI at the weekend to take the NFU’s Mission Milk campaign into one of country's biggest cities.

Saturday shoppers in Leeds were treated to cheese straws, hot chocolate and soup to help spread the word for a fairer deal for dairy farmers.

A seven-foot-tall milk carton was also unveiled to highlight the falling returns that are threatening so many dairy farming businesses.

NFU regional dairy board chairman David Shaw said: “We know we have a huge amount of support from members of the public and they often ask how they can help.

“Obviously the NFU is working hard to bring about important changes in the industry – better contracts, greater transparency on pricing, more dedicated supply chains and so on, but the support of our customers is also vital.

“In particular, they can help by looking out for the Red Tractor logo. This guarantees that the product has been produced, processed and packed in the UK, but it could be used much more widely. We want to know which products don’t carry the logo, so we can challenge processors, manufacturers and retailers and that’s where the public can help.”

Special ‘on-fridge lists’ were handed out, complete with a Mission Milk fridge magnet, giving people a quick and easy way to log any items they come across that do not carry the logo.
