Speaking at the Semex Conference 'Fit for the Future' last week, Dr Wonnacott said that using research and development was paramount to help the industry progress, succeed and maintain competitiveness. She urged dairy farmers to make the most of their levy by using the many products and services DairyCo has on offer.

"We want to use research and development to strengthen our evidence base and ensure that GB dairy stays ahead of the curve and dairy farmers can help us" she said, citing examples of some of the key future proofing projects currently being undertaken by DairyCo. "Tackling key research and development areas and ensuring that the findings from these important projects are transferred to dairy farmers ensures that the best available knowledge is implemented on farm. It also helps us to highlight the great work being carried out on British dairy farms to our consumers," she said.

Dr Wonnacott also highlighted the importance of demonstrating environmental improvements, suggesting that regardless of the farming system every GB dairy farmer should be able to find 'quick wins' that can save money.

"Our work is demonstrating that improved efficiencies on-farm reduce the environmental impact of dairy farming. This is a win-win for our dairy farmers and the general public," explained Dr Wonnacott, "and highlights the responsible and progressive nature of our valuable and important industry."
