The DVD is a support tool to the Teagasc training programme to demonstrate and show these skills. The DVD was filmed at Kildalton Agricultural College, county Kilkenny and demonstrates 14 key skills relating to Dairying and Calf rearing.

Head of education Paddy Browne said; ”With the increase in enrolments in recent years, the DVD will facilitate the demonstration of the skills but will, and can never substitute for the students actually practicing the skills and becoming proficient at the skills. With the current emphasis on expansion in dairying as per the Food Harvest 2020 report, it is all the more important that we give future dairy farmers a thorough grounding in the key skills and competencies needed to run a successful dairy farm”.

These skills are underpinned by a comprehensive theoretical course which covers the technical aspects of dairy farming as well as financial management and farm planning. A period of work experience on a commercial dairy farm will further enhance this training and provide the student with further opportunity to practice the skills.

James Ryan from the Teagasc Kildalton Agricultural College provided the main technical input for the DVD, which was produced by Farm TV.
