Draft Carbon Farming Initiative Announced
AUSTRALIA - The Federal Government has announced the launch a draft Carbon Farming Initiative and call for submissions.

The Minister for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, the Hon Greg Combet AM MP, today (22 November) announced the release of a framework which will allow farmers, foresters and landholders to generate carbon credits under the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI).
Interested organisations and individuals are invited to share feedback with the Government by making a submission to the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency by 5pm AEDT, 21 January 2011.
AgForce Queensland policy director Drew Wagner said: “We welcome the announcement of a possible trial carbon trading scheme for the agricultural sector as the ability to finally look into opportunities surrounding reforestation, manure management, fertiliser usage and particularly soil carbon mitigation, can only be seen as a positive outcome for the agricultural sector.”
“However, we do approach this discussion with a word of warning. Although AgForce supports the agricultural sector’s ability to play a role in carbon mitigation and recognises the importance of possible investment and financial diversity of on-farm production, this cannot come at the cost of our current sustainable food and fibre production systems.
