Disappointment At Fall In Milk Prices
UK - The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) says the fall in prices at this weeks Northern Ireland Milk Auction will be a disappointment to producers. Prices fell by just over a penny from 26.53 pence per litre at the May auction to 25.38 pence per litre at this week's June auction.

UFU Dairy Policy Chairman William Cromie said: “Milk prices have been stable for several months with strong global demand for dairy products. Producers were anticipating another strong auction this week and they will be very disappointed to hear that the price has fallen”.
The UFU says prices remain much stronger than last year – the June 2009 milk auction recorded an average price of just 18.83 pence per litre. However, Mr Cromie said market conditions are now much improved and he highlighted a concern among producers about some local processors importing volumes of milk to Northern Ireland from Great Britain.
He said; “Some processors have been bringing in milk from outside NI and this has inevitably had a negative impact on this weeks auction price. Everyone in the industry must focus on ensuring our milk prices are strong and profitable going forward. It is a blow to producers confidence when they see milk prices falling at a time when commodity prices are still strong. There’s a lot of debt in the industry to be cleared before much needed investment gets underway again and we need more positive signals from processors if this is to be achieved.”
