Make Grassland Your Priority

UK - Productive grassland is key to the success of any beef or sheep enterprise, but many livestock farmers are still failing to achieve the highest levels of output.

To help beef and sheep producers improve their grassland management, the EBLEX Better Returns Programme (BRP) has produced two new manuals related to this essential subject.

Written with technical input from Charlie Morgan, independent grassland specialist, Improving soils for Better Returns offers useful advice to help farmers improve productivity through appropriate soil management, while safeguarding the environment.

Meanwhile, Managing clover for Better Returns outlines the significant advantages of including clovers in farming systems, and how to manage them to optimise their contribution to the business.

“While feed and fertiliser prices remain high, it is the ideal time for beef and sheep producers to take advantage of the nutritious feed growing in their fields,” said Dr Liz Genever, EBLEX livestock scientist.

“Producers are advised to make 2010 the year they put grass at the top of their list for review and improvement.”

Both manuals have been distributed free of charge to members of the Beef and Sheep Better Returns Programme. English levy payers who are not yet members of the programme can register for free by e-mailing [email protected] or by calling 0870 241 8829. Better Returns Programme materials can also be downloaded from www.eblex.org.uk

An updated version of Improving pasture for Better Returns is also available on request.
