Western Australian Farmers Federation (WAFarmers) President, Mike Norton, said that he is looking forward to further engagement with ADF as the proposal is developed and the impact on WAFarmers from a financial and membership perspective becomes clearer.

“WAFarmers members, particularly dairy farmers, can be assured that their interests and those of WAFarmers as a whole will be at the forefront of future negotiations with ADF,” said Mr Norton.

“On the information provided to date, it is not clear where WAFarmers sits in the future plans of ADF.

“Nevertheless, it is recognised that the dairy industry, like other agricultural industries, face challenges of declining farmer numbers and adverse terms of trade that need to be addressed. Whether or not the ADF proposal is the appropriate vessel to meet these challenges is yet to be determined.

“WAFarmers is, however, committed to ensuring that the dairy industry in WA has a secure future and will continue to service the needs of our dairy farmer members going forward.”

Western Australian dairy farmers make up four per cent of the Australian dairy industry and the merits of the ADF proposal will be largely determined by dairy farmers in the Eastern States.

“WAFarmers will be communicating with other State Farming Organisations to ensure that the interests of WA’s dairy farmers are not lost in this process and WAFarmers looks forward to the next round of negotiations with ADF,” Mr Norton concluded.
