More detailed data are being gathered this month. But feedback from Dairy UK members has been positive since the new targets were developed last year between the dairy industry and the Food Standards Agency.

The news means that British cheeses are delivering at least 350 tonnes less salt to the nation’s diets this year than they did in 2007.

Dairy UK Technical Director Dr Ed Komorowski said: “British cheese manufacturers are clearly committed to lowering the salt content of their products for the benefit of consumers.

“It is just one reason that Dairy UK is calling for clearer country of origin labelling on cheese, so that shoppers can make an informed purchasing decision.

“Most dairy products do not contain salt, but in cheese salt is vital to ensure correct flavour development and microbiological safety.”
