The director at the Korea Feed Association stated that consumption of corn and wheat for animal feed increased 11 per cent year-on-year during 2009, as livestock farmers boosted livestock output and meat imports dropped, says Meat and Livestock Australia.

Korean beef imports through quarantine dropped from 224,092 tonnes swt in 2008 to 197,860 tonnes swt in 2009, while domestic beef production and slaughter steadily increased along rising consumer demand.

Total Korean meat imports from sheep, pigs, poultry and beef dropped by two per cent year-on-year, but poultry imports rose six per cent during this period. Tightening credit due to the financial crisis impacted all Korean meat imports during 2009.
