RABDF Calls For The Industry To Unite

03 December 2009

UK - The Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers (RABDF) has called for industry representative organisations to work more closely together following the Government’s latest attack on the livestock sector in its bid to reduce carbon emissions and improve human health.

“While RABDF immediately condemned the Department of Health funded report, in which it calls for a 30 per cent reduction in livestock numbers, we believe that it has also highlighted the fact there has to be a real consensus among the industry to collaborate and communicate common messages back to Government,” commented the association’s chairman, Lyndon Edwards. “The fact that strength lies in numbers couldn’t be more relevant. The livestock sector is a ready target; it’s not the first time we’ve been hit and it won’t be the last.

“In this particular instance, we need to convey to Ministers across all departments that the livestock sector has a tiny impact on the UK’s total CO2 emissions – in the order of one per cent. In addition, the dairy sector has its own Milk Roadmap which has already set out measures to further reduce the environmental impact of producing, processing and consuming liquid milk.

“Furthermore, our livestock sector is largely responsible for the countryside and its appeal to the general public. The recent major decline in sheep populations in the hills and uplands is already impacting on landscapes as well as the rural economy.”
