China Reports Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreak

CHINA - The Chinese veterinary authorities have reported a new Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in the country.

The World Organisation for Animal Health received an immediate notification yesterday, 25 November.

The outbreak occured yesterday in cattle at Fukang City in Xinjiang.

The source of the outbreak is still inconclusive.

Some of the measures applied by the OIE to curb the spread of the disease are:

  • No vaccination
  • No treatment of affected animals

Further measures to be applied are:

  • Stamping out
  • Quarantine
  • Movement control inside the country
  • Zoning
  • Vaccination in response to the outbreak(s)
  • Disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s)
  • Dipping / Spraying

Nested RT-PCR and virus isolation tests were carried out and the results have confirmed the presence of the disease in the country.
