Positive Future for Dairy Industry
UK - National Farmers' Union (NFU) dairy board chairman, Gwyn Jones, has called for fair contracts as the key to a successful dairy industry.Speaking to the NFU Council earlier this week, he said that global dairy markets have staged a significant recovery as shortages in butter spur cream prices - but the situation in Europe remains 'dire' with little prospect of improvement.
Mr Jones added that the situation for farmers caught up in the collapse of Dairy Farmers of Britain should now be improving, although some are still receiving very low milk prices, with processors favouring larger producers.
Those in such a position should ensure they are not subject to a long notice period, allowing a move if a better opportunity arises, he said.
The board chairman also spoke about the new Dairy Contracts Campaign, launched at the recent Dairy Event. He remained convinced that the answer to a successful industry lies in the supply chain, with fair contracts and measures to curb the worst excesses of retailers.
At the same time, farmer representatives and directors had an important role, said Mr Jones. They must engage with processors and be prepared to negotiate for their members and suppliers. Without such engagement, those that they represent should question their suitability for the role.
