According to a report in the Jamestown Sun the case was discovered on the Hettinger-Slope county line.

State Veterinarian Susan Keller told the Sun that this was the first confirmed case for several years and she issued a warning to ranchers about how to dispose of any carcases of dead livestock they find and to contact their vet.

The last major outbreak in the state was when 500 animals died of anthrax in 2005.
