US Tries To Block Import Of Australian Milk Solids

16 September 2009

AUSTRALIA - US lawmakers are stepping up efforts to limit milk protein solids from Australia and other major producers that they blame for helping depress US milk prices.

Dairy state lawmakers are redoubling efforts to rescue the domestic industry from collapsed prices, including higher price supports and tariffs on imported casein and caseinates, much of it from Australia.

New York Senator Chuck Schumer is pushing for restrictions reports ABC Rural.

"They get around our laws, the foreign producers, by changing the milk into solid," he says.

"It comes in, it's not subject to the laws, and then they bring it back into milk."

The US has already raised dairy price supports by hundreds of millions of dollars and recently reactivated the US Dairy Export Incentive Program, strongly opposed by Australia.
