Last Thursday PROLEC’s milk producers demonstrated in Cantabria, against policies that have seen milk prices fall by around 39 per cent from January 2008 to May 2009.

At the same time costs are around €0.377 ;per litre, which is putting the future for many Spanish producers at risk.

The farmers are calling fora flexible regulated market and cost covering milk prices.

In the north of Spain, in the cities of Lugo and Santiago, in Galicia protestors took part in “white week” demonstrations, which were separate protests to express milk producers concerns over the low milk prices.

The protestors blockaded supermarkets with tractors as part of the action.

Unions, independent organizations of milk producers and the whole dairy sector have attacked the situation and they are calling for political change.

PROLEC will be holding a meeting and a press conference with different milk producers’ organizations and unions, on 21 July to launch a manifesto putting forward some possible solutions to decrease of milk prices.

The manifesto will be sent to the Spanish agricultural minister.
