LMC Report: Over 278p/kg Paid For Heifers Last Week

UK - Last week there was a slight increase in reported cattle prices, however towards the end of the week quotes came under some pressure as factories looked ahead to buying cattle for this week. By Friday the U3 quote was down to 270-274p/kg and this remained the case by Wednesday of this week.

Last week there was a significant increase in slaughterings with the total cattle kill up nearly 20 percent. There was an increase in steer slaughterings of nearly 800 head and this was a factor in driving the U3 steer price down by a penny last week to under 277p/kg. In contrast heifer prices rose by a penny.Having come under some pressure in recent weeks, cow prices recovered last week to 215p/kg, an increase of 3p/kg on the previous week’s price.

Cattle imports from ROI continue to increase. Last week nearly 1,000 head were imported, an increase of around 400 head from the previous week. This represents around 10 per cent of the total cattle kill last week.

RoI and GB price comparisons

In the week ending 26/06/09 cattle prices fell across much of England and Wales, but held up well in Scotland and NI. In Scotland the average U3 steer price continues to top 300p/kg, at least 10p/kg higher than each of the other regions in the British Isles. Steer prices in ROI remain a lot more competitive than prices in NI, and this may encourage NI processors to import for direct slaughter. However, the gap between NI and ROI heifer prices is less pronounced. Cow prices remain highest in Northern England and Scotland with O3 cows getting almost 237p/kg. In Scotland the O4 cow price jumped by six pence to over 242p/kg in the week before last.
