Yesterday the Rural Affairs Minister for Wales, Elin Jones, announced that following the recent collapse of DFoB, she was able to exercise some exceptional measures of flexibility to EU rules. As a result of this, Welsh dairy producers affected by the demise could receive 70 per cent of the full SPS 2009 payment due, by 16 October, providing that all validation checks have been successfully completed.

Welcoming this news Dai Davies, NFU Cymru President said, “No-one should underestimate the very real and immediate problems these farmers are facing and it is incumbent upon us all who have the interests of these farmers at heart to assist them in their time of need in anyway we can. I am pleased that the Welsh Assembly Government has been able to act promptly to support the Welsh farmers affected.

“We are more than satisfied with the level of commitment shown by the Welsh Assembly Government and relieved of the assurance that this action will not compromise full payments to other producers in Wales, or detract from the recent track record in Wales of some 90% of recipients receiving their Single Payments in December.”
