NI: Spirits High but Milk Prices Still Dropping

UFU Deputy President and Dairy farmer, John Thompson said; “Although the auction milk price has fallen, the UFU remains optimistic about positively addressing the current crisis in the industry. The fall in price can be partly attributed to current exchange rates but also reflects the ongoing crisis in the global Dairy Industry, but not take away from the immediate problems here in Northern Ireland.”

He continued; “The UFU’s Dairy Roadmap is the culmination of months of analysis, consultation and discussion with a wide variety of industry representatives. The result is a positive and focused plan of action from which we can begin to address the needs of the industry. We have stepped up our lobbying at EU-level, we presented our Roadmap to COPA-COGECA last week in Brussels. On Monday of this week, UFU representatives participated in a staged protest, organized by COPA-COGECA at the EU Council of Ministers meeting in Luxembourg, highlighting the current state of the Northern Ireland Dairy sector.

“In addition, we have initiated meetings with dairy processors in a bid to progress our ideas on behalf of the Northern Ireland Dairy Industry.”
