ABA Says Victims of Flood Need Hope

AUSTRALIA - Australian Beef Association (ABA) Chairman Brad Bellinger said today, the extent of the devastating floods in Queensland's Gulf Region in January this year is only now becoming more obvious.

According to ABA, a 150,000 plus loss of cattle is becoming more apparent. The Gulf's calf factory has been virtually decimated and the effects will be felt in decreased 'turn off' for many years.

With these losses, the Beef Levy Review Committee recommendation to keep the levy at its temporarily increased $5, based on inaccurate assumptions of increasing herd numbers, has already been proven incorrect.

Mr Bellinger said, "Individual Producers have had their already tenuous incomes cut for years to come. In order for them to survive financially many will have to make some tough long term decisions that could affect their family life for years to come. Partners in these remote areas may have to leave home, to earn off farm income. In order to cut costs, children may have to be removed from boarding schools and families could be forced to do without the basic essentials to survive."
