Dairy UK Responds to Milk Protests

UK - Dairy UK Director General Jim Begg has said that everyone with the dairy industry at heart wholly understands the frustration of farmers, who are having a very tough time at present in terms of milk price.

These are very difficult times and it is in everyone’s interests for us to see dairy farmers succeed in their businesses.

“What is happening now is a result of a serious downturn in commodity markets. The de-regulation of markets and, stocks of dairy products and the credit crunch have combined to have a very serious affect", he says.

"Everyone across the dairy supply chain is affected. Not only in Scotland, but right across the EU and indeed the world.

“We will do everything to help and encourage the dairy farming sector in the areas where we can assist. We are at the low point of a cycle at the moment but the fundamentals of the UK dairy industry are strong and growth forecasts for the medium to long term indicate that the situation will improve.”
